SKI MOUNTAIN IN THE APPALACHIAN REGION
The first ski area in the North Carolina High Country. Since 1962, I’ve been skiing. Two quad chairlifts, one double chairlift, one conveyor lift, and one handle-pull lift are available. There are ten slopes in total, including two Terrain Parks. The season runs from the Friday before Thanksgiving until the first Sunday of April.
The French-Swiss Ski College
Is the Southeast’s largest independent ski school, is located here and offers daily group and private training, as well as the SKIwee Children’s Program. The 46,000-square-foot Bavarian-style base lodge is smoke-free and has wireless internet, a restaurant, ski shop, gift shop, nursery for children ages 1 to 4, locker rooms, video game room, meeting rooms, and a 200-foot observation deck—wedding celebrations in the off-season. Ski-and-stay packages and slopeside lodging are available. Group discounts are available. Rates are different in the early and late seasons.
RESORT ON BEECH MOUNTAIN
With a peak elevation of 5,506 feet, Ski Beech is the highest ski area in the east. Ski Beech offers varied terrain for skiing and snowboarding, with 15 slopes, seven chair lifts, two surface lifts, and an 830-foot vertical drop. A 7000 square foot refrigerated outdoor ice skating rink is located in the heart of Beech Tree Village, along with shopping, dining, a ski school, and a youth learning centre.
SUGAR MOUNTAIN RESORT
The largest ski/snowboard area in North Carolina, with 20 slopes ranging from beginner to expert, a terrain park, eight lifts, and an access tubing park. 100% snowmaking on 115 skiable acres; 1,200 feet of vertical; ski and snowboard schools for all ages and abilities; ski and snowboard rental shops; 2 cafeterias; the Last Run Lounge; Sugar Mountain Sports Shop; winter value packages, and more. The NORBA National Mountain Bike Series event, scenic lift rides, hiking, riding, and Oktoberfest are popular summer activities.

ACTIVITIES IN BOONE
The Boone area has a wide range of water sports for all degrees of adventure, from “simple” to “difficult.” Canoeing, kayaking, and whitewater rafting are all available in Boone. Tubing down the New River, which runs north and is one of the oldest rivers in the world, is a favourite summer pastime.
EXPLORE THE HIGH COUNTRY WHILE HIKING
Hikers can follow the Appalachian Trail across the Roan, and Hump Mountains, where waving grasses provide alpine vistas, scale cliffs a mile above surrounding valleys to reach MacRae Peak at Grandfather Mountain State Park, explore the Linville Gorge Wilderness, and follow the gushing, waterfall-filled drainages of the Pisgah National Forest’s Wilson Stream. Hikes to waterfalls abound throughout the High Country, and novice and experienced hikers both can stroll along the shores of one of the few Boone Area Lakes.
