VAIL
Vail’s ski terrain is massive and diverse, and it’s often referred to as the crowning jewel of Colorado ski resorts. It’s a true mega-resort, which may deter some, but it’s one of the few ski locations that truly has it all! Golden Peak, Vail Village, and Lionshead are the three base districts of this picturesque ski city, with an appealing European vibe. Because it is primarily purpose-built, much of it is pedestrianized, making meandering through this picture-perfect resort to the many stores, restaurants, and bars a joy in itself. The town is also located, each giving a different ski experience of fewer than 8 miles apart. While its illustrious name and iconic ski town are enough to entice crowds of skiers, most people overlook the fact that Aspen is one of the few ski resorts in Colorado where altitude sickness is not a factor. PARK IN THE WINTER
Despite being the state’s oldest continuously operating ski resort, this location maintains a down-to-earth atmosphere. Winter Park is known for its rail service (Winter Park Express), which runs from Denver’s downtown to the mountain. It’s only a shame that this service is only available on weekends from January to March. The ski terrain varies from vast open bowls to steep alpine chutes, so there’s something for everyone. Keep in mind that Winter Park isn’t as abundant as some other Colorado ski resorts, and it’s similar to Steamboat in this regard, so that some amenities may be lacking. 90 miles from Denver International Airport (2-hour drive).
BEAVER CREEK
This purpose-built ski resort is all about relaxing as much as it is about the powder, which is equally as good! Beaver Creek, about 10 miles west of Vail, doesn’t have the same crowds as its bigger sister, but it also doesn’t have nearly as much terrain. A substantial percentage of the ski terrain is made up of immaculately groomed green and blue lines. Unlike many other ski resorts, most tracks gently wind down the mountain providing a spectacular and unique skiing experience. If you’re looking for luxury, you’ll find it all at Beaver Creek.
