Skiing in Cyprus

skier and tree lined pistes

Did you ever think that you could go skiing in Cyprus? Neither did I to be honest, and the second revelation is, that it’s just an hour’s drive away from the sunny resort of Limassol and Nicosia, the capital of Cyprus.
Who would have thought it, nevertheless, the impressive range of the Troodos Mountains is a haven for sports activities in the winter months. This range of mountains is found in western Cyprus and its stunning forests attract walkers and hikers in the summer and keen skiers in the winter. At the summit of the Troodos Mountains is where you will discover the one and only skiing centre in all of Cyprus. As you can image the views are truly incredible whether you visit summer or winter.
However, from early January until the beginning of April you can also ski on the slopes of Mount Olympus which stands at 1951 metres above sea level. Mount Olympus is the highest peak in the Troodos Mountains and is only 2 km from the Troodos Mountain resort. Just 12 km from here is the Platres Mountain resort.
Platres, is where the rich, famous and royalty opt to stay for their skiing holidays. It’s located at 1065 metres above sea level and is surrounded by spectacular natural scenic landscapes and challenging cross country trails. It’s called paradise by those who visit, and this location is utterly exclusive. If you want to spot a familiar face from TV and film, head to the Platres Mountains.
The skiing and snowboarding runs on Mount Olympus are named after the Greek Gods, Aphrodite, Zeus, Hermes and Hera in Europe’s most southerly ski resort. All skiing levels are catered for beginners, intermediate and advanced. You can discover 1150 metres of marked pistes of which there are eight, and they are served by four lifts.
If you are a beginner then head to the Sun Valley (one and two slopes) here you can relax and take your time practicing your new found skills. Thrill seekers can show off their moves and enjoy being challenged on the North Face (one and two slopes).
World Snow Day is celebrated each January (usually on a Sunday) with a vast array of celebrations at the Troodos Ski Resort. Academy coaches give children a free introduction and lessons to welcome them to the sport. Fun and games take place here, including the Snow Sculpture Competition, for all ages to take part in. It’s a super way to get young children active and to take advantage of the wonderful range of winter activities available.
Cyprus isn’t just about sunshine, beaches and swimming in the Mediterranean Sea, as fabulous as they are. Although, it has to be said not everyone may want to partake in skiing and snowboarding. If that’s the case, fear not, as those who prefer to admire skiing from afar, can sit back, relax and enjoy the views of snowcapped mountains and tuck into delicious local Cypriot dishes, whilst sat by a roaring fireplace.
Start with a shot of Zivania, produced in the mountain villages to keep the cold out and warm the cockles of your heart. Snack on almonds or walnuts, raisins, soujouko and slices of cured lountza. For the main event you must try avgolemono (soup) followed by moussaka or tavas (lamb stew). These hearty dishes will keep you warm and fill your tummy. After eating, enjoy a walk in the traditional mountain villages set in the peaks of the Troodos Mountains. Bathed in a blanket of white, they are stunning, so don’t forget your camera. Visit one of the many vinyards and sample a glass or two of a local red wine. These picturesque villages and vineyards are set on the southern slopes of the mountains.
How does skiing in Cyprus appeal to you?
