Generally, those who want to experience new and exciting countries would choose to visit North Korea. However, it isn’t really somewhere many tourists would consider taking a holiday. Yes, it’s true that any sightseeing tours you may want to take, you must be accompanied by a guide, solo tours and independently back packing in North Korea is not possible. Don’t let that stop you visiting this captivating country, with its rich culture, ancient traditions, beautiful landscapes and its skiing!
I know, you wouldn’t normally think about skiing or snowboarding in North Korea and there are only three ski resorts, but if you are yearning to try something different, this is a great option to look at. In fact, the government is hoping to increase tourist numbers by promoting the luxury ski resort of Masikryong. The other ski resorts are named Begaebong and Kanggye and if you are watching your pennies head to one of these.
Masikryong
Is located on the Masik Pass in Kangwon Province in North Korea. It opened its doors on 31st December 2013. It boasts over 1400 hectares perfect for skiing, sleighing and skating on the ice rink there. There are 10 snowy slopes and each slope averages a length of 1700m, they vary in width from 40 to 120m. Its longest run is 4.8km (3 miles). Imagine, skiing down 110 km (70 miles) of deserted slopes with powdery snow and breathtaking views. These slopes are ideal for beginners and intermediate skiers. The lift systems include chair and drag lifts. Snow cannons provide a backup if needed. Its base elevation is 768m (2,520 ft) and its top elevation is 1,360 m (4,460 ft) and there are pavilions on the summit of Taehwa Peak (1,360m). There is a heliport for convenience and its nearest major city is Wonsan. The ski season is from November to March when there is heavy snowfall.
After a busy day on the pistes, you can head to your onsite hotel and enjoy all the trappings that a luxury ski resort offers. A swimming pool, a massage room to soothe your aching muscles, a sauna to relax in and then treat yourself at the beauty parlour before dinner. Of course there are the usual bars, cafes and restaurants to choose from.
Kanggye
Kanggye ski resort is located in Kanggye City, Chagang Province just 50km from the border with China. This resort is much smaller than Masikryong, however it does have in its favour that it is newer. It’s reported it took less than month to complete! It boasts two ski resorts within this area covering 12 acres with a 530m (1,740 ft) main slope. Its terrain is mountainous and the winters are long and hard, these slopes are suitable for beginners and advanced skiers. It has 1 ski lift that can move 1000 passengers per hour and 1 people mover.
Begaebong
This ski resort is located in the town of Begaebong in the northern region of Samjiyon. It sits on an active volcano would you believe, called Mount Paektu. However, it does retain the title of being North Koreas first ever ski resort. This ski resort is small, just 875 yards of ski slope and 1 lift. Small and compact but if you’re visiting North Korea it would be advisable to drop in, it’s an incredibly pretty village and if you want to get away from the crowds, you will certainly achieve that.
