Known for its sunny days, Serre Chevalier is the collective name for 13 villages spread across a valley offering over 250kms of pistes. With very welcoming and friendly locals, France’s largest unknown resort caters for family, group or couple skiing holidays. Outside the school holidays, those in the know loyally return year after year to some of the emptiest south-facing sunny slopes in the Alps.
Sat along the Guisane Valley, it’s mainly dominated by 4 main ski stations. Each village has its own appeal, Briancon at 1200m is good for non-skiers, Chantemerle at 1350m is a bit quieter and good for family ski holidays, Villeneuve at 1400m has the most active apres and Monetier at 1500m is the most picturesque and great for romantic skiing holidays.
Skiing in Serre Chevalier
In addition to the local 250km of pisted runs you can also purchase a Grand Galaxie skiing area lift pass to cover Serre Chevalier, La Grave, Les Deux Alpes and Puy Saint Vincent. It’s not linked to any other resorts by lifts, nor buses to Alpe d’Huez or Les Deux Alpes. The closest resort to to Serre Chavalier is Montgenevre or La Grave. Serre Chevalier is a good size with more than 10 access points to the slopes. It’s the fifth largest ski area in France, after the Three Valleys, Portes du Soleil, Espace Killy and Paradiski. Serre Che is little known for skiing holidays by the Brits, however it offers fantastic skiing for all, thanks to its north facing slopes and variety of terrain. Beginners will find a selection of slopes close to the resort and intermediates will be happy with the very long sweeping blues and reds of up to 10km to play on. Advanced skiers may like the off-piste action on the Olympic Luc Alphand or moguls at Le Bez.
